Class Project
Fractions Webquest
|
We have already worked with fractions this year. We have added and subtracted fractions and now we are going to multiply and divide them.
Can you think of times when you would need to use fractions? When you are cooking, you have to measure the ingredients like ¼ cup of oil, ½ pound of sugar or ¾ cups of flour, etc. Carpenters must measure wood and other materials accurately to the nearest 1/8 or 1/16 of an inch. They often need to add mixed fractions. There are many careers (jobs) that require you to know fractions. Click here to see a list. Write down 5 jobs that use fractions. Task: Today, apply what you have learned about multiplying and dividing fractions. You will find a recipe and cut it in half, double and quadruple it. Process: You can work in pairs to complete this web quest. Some review activities are links that you click on but you are not required to turn it in at the end of class. You are ONLY REQUIRED to turn in an electronic presentation of your recipe (see below for details). Please complete the following review activities (if needed) in the following order: 1. Fractions (do lessons 12-17) 2. Take this quiz on multiplying fractions. 3. Take this quiz on dividing fractions. 4. Now that you’ve gotten some practice. Let’s look at some recipes and use what we know. Recipe Task 1. Find a simple recipe in a recipe book or on the internet (www.recipes.com, www.foodnetwork.com , www.allrecipes.com ) with at least 6 fractions in the ingredients list that serves at least 4 people. Write the original recipe. 2. Rewrite the recipe for twice as many people. Show your work and explain your strategies. 3. Rewrite the recipe for half as many people. Show your work and explain your strategies. 4. Rewrite the recipe for quadruple the number of people. Show your work and explain your strategies. 5. Explain how you would adjust your recipe to feed everyone in your class and don’t forget your teacher! 6. Summarize recipes in a table. See example below: Peanuter Butter Cookies Ingredients Original 1/2 Double (2x) Quadruple (4x) Servings 4 2 8 16 Water 1 cup 1/2 cup 2 cup 4 cups Peanut butter 3/4 tsp 3/8 tsp 1 1/2 tsp 3 tsp Flour 1/2 tsp 1/4 tsp 1 tsp 2 tsp Lastly, make a nice electronic presentation of your recipe either in whatever application you like (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Pixie, etc.). It needs to have a picture of your dish, the ingredients and directions. Make it colorful and interesting to look at. Make sure that you give credit to the chef that came up with the recipe. (If the chef’s name is not there, use the website that it came from.) You can be as creative as you want! Save all work to your “F” drive (with your lunch # on it). ***** Make sure you log in to first class and email me your recipe!**** 1. Create new message 2. Type z livin (my name should pop up) 3.
